The purpose of this paper is to explore the policy and legislative framework for managing water infrastructure assets in the Rustenburg Local Municipality. The lack of asset management policies and the implementation of legislation have left municipalities without asset information for planning. Although infrastructure assets improve quality of life and drive economies, if infrastructure asset management policies and legislation are not in place and adhered to, water provision cannot be realised. A qualitative research design, including a desktop (document) review of policies and legislation on infrastructure asset management and a review of literature from 2011 to 2023, was employed
