Long abstract	Shortly after the EC Foreign Minister Troika’s visit to South Africa in September, I took stock of the negotiating process in a letter dated 9 October 1992 to the Head of Unit for Southern Africa, Torben Brylle, with a view to preparing for the Danish EC Presidency in the first half of 1993. The following are selected key passages from the letter which provide a snapshot of the situation in 1992 between the parties, the uncertainty about how far they dare and will go and the parties’ views of the EC countries:
