| Long abstract | This chapter reviews 206 women writers, 1776-1848, from the region of British north America, divided here into Canada, the United States 18th century, and the United States 19th century. The United States is divided because of the great number of women found in that tradition. Writers range from Quakers to military strategists, encompassing abolitionists, hymn writers, apologists for the Confederacy, president’s wives, mill workers, adventurers, and homemakers. It covers lyric and epic poetry, theatre, and a wide variety of prose genres, from diary to romance. |
