Long abstract

The article examines the syntactic phenomenon of fronting in the protases of אִם conditionals within Biblical Hebrew, focusing on constructions where constituents are shifted from their canonical positions. The study categorises protases into those with single or multiple clauses and explores their syntactic patterns, including verb-initial and non-verbal fronted configurations. Fronting is analysed as a mechanism for alternative topic selection, narrow focus, and discourse dependency. Examples from the Hebrew Bible illustrate semantic and syntactic variations, with verbs such as yiqṭol, qaṭal, and infinitive absolute forms playing a central role. The analysis considers broader linguistic frameworks, highlighting parallels with general Semitic syntax while addressing the implications for understanding Biblical Hebrew clause structure.
