| Long abstract | This chapter provides an overview of the various ways in which non-citizens were integrated into the Athenian civic community, ranging from the economic domain to the military, fiscal, judicial and religious spheres. Based on this overview, the chapter reflects on the dynamics that prompted these forms of integration and assesses their social and political extent. Finally, it concludes by briefly considering some of the short- and long-term impact that the close interaction of citizens and non-citizens in various non-institutional centers of polis life may have had on the Athenian civic community |
