| Long abstract | The emergence and evolution of the township of Alexandra in Johannesburg, South Africa, is a significant chapter in the urban history of the region. As a distinctive mixed settlement, it represents the complexities and challenges associated with the development of urban spaces in a segregated society. This paper explores the origins and development of Alexandra and examines the historical background of the township and how it has transformed over time. It investigates the historical, social, economic, and cultural factors that have shaped this vibrant community. By analysing its early formation, urban planning, and subsequent changes, this study aims to understand the dynamics that contribute to its growth, transformation, and challenges. The growth of Alexandra as a mixed settlement has outpaced government attempts to improve infrastructure, provide sufficient housing and services, and mitigate disasters and vulnerabilities. A multidisciplinary approach, combining archival research, interviews, and spatial analysis, offers a comprehensive examination of the complexities surrounding this settlement. The findings provide insight into the difficulties and opportunities that can inform future policies and interventions aimed at addressing the challenges faced by Alexandra and promoting sustainable development. A fundamentally new strategy is imperative. |
