Major Kevin S. Malmquist is an active-duty US.Army officer serving as Army Strategist, currently assigned to US Army South. He received his Ph.D. in military history from Florida State University in 2022 after defending his dissertation ‘Bricks and Mortar: The Military Consequences of the Destruction of Cultural, Religious, and Historical Monuments in Armed Conflict’. His military career includes time as an enlisted infantry soldier in the Minnesota Army National Guard and several years as a Field Artillery officer, serving in positions at the battery and battalion level. He was selected to join the Department of History at the United States Military Academy at West Point and to attend graduate school through the Advanced Civil Schooling programme. He taught military history at West Point, where he was awarded the academic rank of Assistant Professor and completed his Ph.D. candidacy. While assigned to West Point, he transitioned career fields and became an Army Strategist. Major Malmquist’s research explores the tactical, operational and strategic consequences of destroying cultural property with the hope of better understanding how these types of actions impact the battlefield and beyond.
