Geochronological methods provide information on the timing, rates and frequency of environmental processes and events that occur over timescales that exceed laboratory measurements and/or human observation. This chapter discusses the principles of geochronological methods, their applications and limitations.

  1. There are several textbooks that address geochronology. The textbooks by Walker, M., 2005. Quaternary Dating Methods (John Wiley and Sons) and R. Bradley., 2015. Paleoclimatology: Reconstructing Climates of the Quaternary (Academic Press) both provide an excellent overview of many different types of geochronological technique, focusing on methods that are applicable over the past 2 Ma.
  2. The textbooks by A.P. Dickin, 2005. Radiogenic Isotope Geology (Cambridge University Press) and by G. Faure and T.M. Mensing, 2004. Isotopes: Principles and Applications (Wiley) provide detailed information on different radiometric techniques.
