| Long abstract | Arlington Stringham, an M.P., inadvertently makes a joke during a House of Commons debate. When this is reported in the newspapers, he starts to believe that he is a wit and to make what he thinks are clever comments at every possible opportunity. His wife of many years is disturbed by this sudden change in his character. When she discovers that most of his witticisms have been borrowed from Lady Isobel, a sharp-tongued acquaintance of theirs, she takes an overdose of her sleeping draught. |
