Long abstractIn premodern times, Jews, when threatened, “would fast and pray to God to still the hand of the slaughterers, to turn the heart of the wicked lord or king toward goodness.” More recently, however, “a generation of Jewish revolutionaries…ridiculed and scoffed at the fasters, penitents, and self-flagellators” and fought against those who oppressed the Jews. Yet today, students have returned to fasting. Meanwhile, Jewish workers’ organization applaud them while, in Lodz, Jewish workers merely request that the authorities protect the Jewish population from attack rather than demanding action backed up by force.
