Long abstract Looks at the history of the Catholic Church’s ministry to the Deaf community over 2 000. It is schematic but deals with three main developments in the Church’s approach firstly focusing on healing, secondly, education of the deaf and thirdly, Deaf rights. It also highlights the counter arguments developed against the use of sign language in deaf education.
