| Long abstract | Through the analysis of seven case studies, this article shows how specific forms of supra-poleic citizenship could serve as a tool to project influence and strengthen ties in distant regions and in some cases to effectively dematerialize traditional borders. In light of this, this article proposes not to definitively give up the view of koina as continuous territorial units nor to systematically interpret suprapoleic citizenship treaties as a form of expansion of control. It rather suggests a multi-level approach to federal territory and citizenship, moving beyond binary distinctions between 'complete' and 'incomplete' forms of belonging and control. |
