Long abstract Introduces the concepts and language used within Deaf culture and that will feature prominently within the book like deafness, deaf, Deaf, phonocentrism, audism, Deaf culture, Deaf Gain and so forth. It also looks at the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas and his understanding of saintliness and how it is elaborated upon by Edith Wyschogrod in relation to developing a post-modern ethics. The chapter concludes with a comparison with the Catholic Church’s understanding of sanctity and the cult of the saints.
