Long abstract In this chapter the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas is elaborated upon more extensively and its applicability for this book. Taking an article and photograph from The Star newspaper as a heuristic tool, the relevance of Levinas’ philosophy is illustrated as a means to uncovering alternative ways of reading the relationship between hearing and deaf people. This chapter was in part previously published as ‘Christian Ministry, the Philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas and the Deaf Community,’ Journal of Theology for Southern Africa, 167, July 2020, 43-61. Permission for using this work as a chapter in this book is being sought.
