Long abstractWhen packing for a war zone, a deck of cards is an obvi-ous choice. Most soldiers fit one into a rucksack or combat uniform, issued items that seem designed for slipping extra items into their many side pockets. A preventative measure of a kind, a deck of cards promises to protect against boredom or unwanted conversation, and will serve without a wireless signal or powered battery. My now husband deployed to Afghanistan in 2010, and he took with him a lightly used, ordinary, Bicycle-brand deck. I don’t remember where it came from or even whether I knew he packed it. But within a week of his departure we were play-ing a game—if game is the word for the system we devised. A very simple, wholly necessary game. It required two decks, the one he kept and one that I did.
