Long abstract | Kellie Jones’s ‘Swimming with E.C.’ places the artwork of Elizabeth Catlett in the context of the political history of artists and others who worked between Mexico and the United States. Catlett’s themes have remained consistent over time: celebrations of women – their power, their politics, their bodies, their bond with their children, and their culture. Her contribution can, in many ways, be considered part of the recent history of self-portraiture in art through the lens of migration, photography and performance. |
