| Long abstract | Imagine me as a two-year-old. My parents have told me that, even at two, I could read. There’s a story that once, at a hotel, strangers noticed me reading, and they were impressed and startled. Maybe scared? I don’t know. I don’t remember any of this. I don’t remember how I read. I also don’t remember what it was like to be unable to read. I don’t remember before and after reading. Was there a moment of epiphany, when the written word transformed from arbitrary scratches into legible text? When the concept of reading itself, as a possibility, finally occurred to me? What would that even feel like? |
