Long abstract | The time has come to vigorously fight back against the devaluation of the humanities by policy makers and by college administrations thatseek to close programs due to so-called financial exigencies, and I believe that Medieval Studies has an important role to play in this battle.Part of me thinks that, out of mere principle, we should refuse to kowtow to these threats and to hold our linethat the hu-manities are inherently valuable in and of themselves; after all, they have served as the foundation for a univer-sity education for centuries. In the end, though, my more pragmatic side wins out.The push for accountability will not slacken, but will steadily increase, as we move into the future. |
