Usage Metrics

Thoth Usage Metrics offers publishers robust, privacy-focused insights into the usage of their open-access books and chapters. Leveraging the power of the OPERAS Metrics service to consolidate aggregated and standardised data across multiple platforms, this service is tailored to help publishers understand, optimise, and report the impact of their publications.

Key features include:

• Integrated Data Sources: Thoth Usage Metrics consolidates usage data from multiple platforms to provide a broader picture of a publication’s reach. By aggregating data across multiple platforms, publishers can track engagement with their open access titles more effectively. Currently, Thoth Usage Metrics incorporates usage data from the following platforms:
  • Google Books: Capturing reader interactions with books in the Google ecosystem.
  • OAPEN: Providing detailed metrics on downloads originating from the OAPEN Library.
  • Crossref Events:
  • Publishers’ own website: including direct interactions with files hosted via Thoth on behalf of the publisher (see Thoth File Hosting), or via a publisher's own website (dependent on data delivery by the publisher to OPERAS Metrics).
• Privacy-Respecting Analytics: We prioritise reader privacy while delivering actionable usage data for files hosted through Thoth as well as multiple other sources. Publishers can trust that their analytics are compliant with privacy standards such as GDPR.

Expanding Data Coverage

Thoth Open Metadata is part of a larger group of stakeholders actively working to establish a community-led governance model for the OPERAS Metrics service, and to expand the range of sources included in the service. Future integrations will include major academic publishing platforms such as JSTOR and Project MUSE., with a mid-term goal of supporting all platforms that are part of the Thoth Plus dissemination network. This will further enrich the data and enhance the value of the analytics.

Publisher Dashboard

Thoth Open Metadata provides a user-friendly publisher dashboard designed to provide intuitive visualisations of usage metrics across an entire portfolio, allowing publishers to quickly identify trends, track the performance of individual works, and make data-driven decisions.
