Thoth File Hosting

Thoth File Hosting offers a seamless, efficient, and globally optimised solution for hosting and distributing your publications. All our services are designed with publishers’ independence in mind, ensuring that you are not being locked in to any perpetual dependencies. For file hosting, we will ensure that your content is not only accessible but also delivered quickly and reliably to readers around the world.

Key features include:

  • Integration of Publisher-Owned Domain: Maintain complete control over your branding and content. Simply add a DNS entry pointing to a subdomain of your choice to our servers, and we’ll handle the rest. Your Thoth-hosted files will appear seamlessly under your domain.
  • Global Content Delivery Network (CDN): Our CDN ensures that your files are distributed and served from data centers worldwide. Files are uploaded to a central server and mirrored across the globe, allowing users to download from the server nearest to them for faster access, reduced latency, and near-zero downtime.
  • Structured and Consistent URLs: Thoth File Hosting simplifies access with clean, structured URLs based on DOIs. For example: https://books.oapublisher.org/10.12345/45678.pdf This format enhances discoverability and ensures a professional, consistent and easily parsable link structure.
  • Comprehensive Usage Metrics: Gain insights into your readership with detailed, DOI-level analytics. Metrics include daily usage data with geographic breakdowns by country, empowering you to understand and adapt to your audience's needs.
  • Automatic File Migration: Transitioning to Thoth File Hosting is effortless. Our system can automatically retrieve files from Thoth-stored URLs, upload them to the CDN, and then update the URLs within Thoth’s metadata records. This ensures a smooth, uninterrupted migration process.

Thoth File Hosting is your one-stop solution for reliable, scalable, and easy file distribution. By combining state-of-the-art technology with an intuitive setup, we ensure your publications reach readers efficiently and effectively, all while enabling you to keep in full control over your books and chapters.

Thoth Usage Statistics

Thoth Usage Statistics offers publishers robust, privacy-focused insights into the usage of their open-access books and chapters. Leveraging the power of the OPERAS Metrics service to provide aggregated and standardised data across multiple platforms, this service is tailored to help publishers understand and optimise the impact of their publications.

Key features include:

  • OPERAS Metrics Service Integration: At the heart of Thoth Usage Statistics is our partnership with the OPERAS Metrics service. OPERAS Metrics provides an open framework for collecting, processing, and aggregating usage data from diverse sources. Key features of the OPERAS Metrics platform include:
    • Consolidation of Data: Aggregates usage statistics across platforms, standardising metrics to ensure comparability.
    • Interoperability: Operates within a broader scholarly ecosystem, supporting data-sharing standards like COUNTER.
    • Actionable Insights: Enables publishers to measure performance across different dissemination channels effectively.
    • Focus on Sustainability and Open Science: Part of the OPERAS Research Infrastructure, promoting diamond open-access publishing and transparent reporting practices.
  • Privacy-Respecting Analytics: We prioritise reader privacy while delivering actionable usage data for files hosted through Thoth as well as multiple other sources. Publishers can trust that their analytics are compliant with privacy standards such as GDPR.
  • Integrated Data Sources: Thoth Usage Statistics consolidates usage data from multiple platforms to provide a broader picture of a publication’s reach. By aggregating data across multiple platforms, publishers can track engagement with their open access titles more effectively.
Currently, Thoth Usage Statistics incorporates usage data from the following platforms:
    • Google Books: Capturing reader interactions with books in the Google ecosystem.
    • OAPEN: Providing detailed metrics on downloads within the OAPEN Library.
    • Publishers’ own website: including direct interactions with files hosted via Thoth on behalf of the publisher (see Thoth Hosting: Files), or via a publisher's own website.
  • Expanding Data Coverage: We are actively working to expand the range of sources included in the service. Future integrations will include major academic publishing platforms such as JSTOR and Project MUSE., with a mid-term goal of supporting all platforms that are part of the Thoth Plus dissemination network. This will further enrich the data and enhance the value of the analytics.
  • Publisher Dashboard (in development): We are seeking to implement a user-friendly publisher dashboard designed to provide intuitive visualisations of usage statistics across an entire portfolio. This will allow publishers to quickly identify trends, track the performance of individual works, and make data-driven decisions.

Thoth Usage Statistics is your trusted tool for gaining deep insights into your publications’ impact, combining privacy-respecting data collection practices with advanced analytics. Whether tracking the performance of individual works or your entire portfolio, this service supports publishers in maximising their reach and understanding their audience.
